Music Birthday: Tank

Today, January 1, 1976, Tank was born Durrell Babbs, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Before his R&B hits like ‘Please Don’t Go’ and ‘Your One,’ Tank lent those lush vocals to Aaliyah’s posthumous single, ‘Come Over.’

The song was written by Johnta Austin, and produced by Jazze Pha, Bryan-Micahael Cox and Kevin Hicks – it’s included on Aaliyah’s “I Care 4 U” compilation album.

On September 19, 2003, ‘Come Over’ peaked at no. 32 on the US Billboard Hot 100, enjoying a 20-week chart run. The song also reached no. 9 on Billboard’s R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay chart.

The song is a cover of Changing Faces’ 2000 single; and ever since Aaliyah & Tank’s version, Kehlani sampled it twice: ‘Personal’ and ‘Can I.’

Other dope tracks on “I Care 4 U” are ‘More than a Woman,’ ‘Miss You,’ ‘Don’t Know What to Tell Ya,’ ‘I Care 4 U, and ‘Erica Kane.’
